The black radish is the older or the younger sister of the small red radish. It has a characteristic pungent odor and bitter taste, it stimulates the appetite, and in folk medicine it is often used for problems with the liver and the gall bladder, but also as a help against infections during winter.
The ancient people knew well and, above all, appreciated the ingredients and the effects of the radish on our bodies. From the earliest times it has been used as a remedy for catarrh of the upper respiratory tract, bronchitis, cough, and tuberculosis of the lungs, and it is recommedned for constipation as well.
The radish is very important for women, used as food it sutisfies the need of the organism for minerals and ferments and thus, it helps the rejuvenation. In addition, it stimulates the period and increases the milk production in nursing mothers.
The cocktail of juices of radishes, carrots and beets improve the blood count and purify the body, and it is recommended as a supplement to the winter food and as help in the defense against infections.
How and why to use the black radish?
You can eat the freshly grated radish mixed with oil and lemon juice as a salad. Do not add salt, because in contact with salt it becomes very harmful.
You can eat it sweetened with honey, it helps in case of constipation, problems with the stomach, poor appetite, problems with the liver, different spots on the face and pimples on the skin.
It helps with urination and relieves the bloating, so it is used in diseases of the kidneys and the bladder, especially against stones and difficulty with urination. For this purpose, you should drink the black radish juice in the morning on an empty stomach and in the evening before going to bed. In case of cough and bronchitis, it eases the expectoration.
The black radish is useful in the strengthening of the functions of the respiratory organs, the coughing out of the bronchial secretion and as a tranquilizer, especially when there are problems with inflammation of the bronchi, coughing and asthma.
It is an excellent stimulant in the elimination of the tiredness, anemia in children or fatigue in adults. Its diuretic properties are recognized in the fight against the pain caused by arthritis, rheumatism and gout.
Traditional medicine uses black radish, although it is significant just as the white radish. It contains sodium, potassium, magnesium, vitamins and other ingredients that provide its taste and odor.
For healing, you should use only the fresh juice squeesed from the root. You should wash the radishes well, peel them, grate them, and then put them in an electronic juicer to squeeze the juice. It is recommended to take 100-150 grams of juice in several smaller doses during 4-5 days, after which you should make a break of 2-3 days. You should repeat this for a longer period in order to feel the effects of the black radish.
In the folk medicine, the freshly squeezed juice is used to treat neuralgia and ischialgia by rubbing it in the skin along the length of the nerves. The healing effect comes quite fast. It is easier to take the radish if you add a little warm milk.
In order to make syrup, you should chop or grate the radish, put sugar or honey on it and keep it like that for at least four hours, and then strain it. The adults should take 2-3 tablespoons of it and children 1 tablespoon on every hour.
You can also cook the radish, add half the quantity of honey in it and cook everything again. You should take one tablespoon of it on every hour against asthma and in order to remove the mucus from the throat, the trachea and the chest.
You should use only freshly grated radish because it loses its healing properties when it is left like that. The more pungent radish is always better.
It is useful in pulmonary diseases and cough. Cut slices of the root of black radishes with its peel and arrange them in a bowl for salad. Add sugar on every layer, it is recommended to use brown sugar powder. Cover the bowl with a kitchen towel and keep it like that for 24 hours. Strain the syrup carefully and keep it in a sealed container. Take 4-5 tablespoons of it during the day, and you should use this remedy until it is proved as useful. This tonic is used for strengthening. Young children should take 3 tablespoons a day, for one month.
The crushed seeds of radish have antimicrobial and antifungal effects. As a mash it is used in the treatment of fungal diseases on the skin.
Arthritis, arthrosis, rheumatism and gout
Grate the healthy black radish root together with its peel. Pour high quality white wine over it and keep it like that for 14 days. You should shake the bowl every day. Strain the mixture through a paper filter and keep it in a well sealed bottle. Drink 1 dl of this mixture every morning on an empty stomach. The cure lasts for 20 days. You should repeat this after three months.
To remove gallstones
You should not eat radishes too often, but it is good to eat them as soon as some infections occur. Today, the radish is usually used when there are disorders to the work of the liver and the gallbladder because it is proved that the therapy with black radish juice accelerates the production of the bile, increases its flow, it breaks the stones and balances the work of the gallbladder, which when it contracts it pushes the stones mixed with bile fluid to the intestines, which helps to stop the constipation. The black radish juice washes the gallbladder, but before taking the remedy you should certainly consult your doctor.
You should drink black radish juice every morning on an empty stomach for two months. The first day you should drink one glass, the second day two glasses, the third day three glasses, the fourth day four glasses, and then go back until you get to one glass. The amount of the glass should be about 30 ml. If you need to repeat this, you should do it after two weeks. It is also helpful to eat to peeled and sliced radishes on an empty stomach every morning. You should take it every day for 2-3 weeks.
WARNING: This therapy can cause unwanted side effects followed by dangerous effects on the liver. In that case, you should immediately stop taking the black radish. Also the radishes must not be consumed by people who have inflamation of the stomach.
Worms in Children
Squeeze one tablespoon of juice from grated radishes, carrots and onions. Mix that and add 2-4 cloves of garlic peeled and chopped. You should take this 3 times a day before meals.
