Can rosemary increase your memory? Scientists have discovered that the smell of rosemary has a powerful effect on your brain and can boost your memory up to 75%.
It was found that people who felt rosemary essential oil will be more likely to remember something, compared to individuals who did not smell the oil. Also, oil improves long-term memory alertness and concentration. It will also reduce mental fatigue and sluggishness, and enhance mental clarity.
A team of psychologists from the University of Northumbria at Newcastle found that Rosemary also improves concentration.
“We have based our study on previous research on the effects of rosemary on long-term memory and mental arithmetic, and we are focused on remembering the events that will happen and assigned responsibilities. It is crucial to the daily functioning of the man” said Mark Moss.
A study was designed to assess the olfactory impact of the essential oils of rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) on cognitive performance and mood in healthy volunteers. Analysis revealed that Rosemary produces a significant enhancement of performance for overall quality of memory and secondary memory factors, but also produce an impairment of speed of memory compared to controls.
These findings indicate that the olfactory properties of this essential oil can produce real effects on cognitive performance, as well as subjective effects on mood. These actions make it an excellent option to try for the cognitive issue associated with fibromyalgia and myalgic encephalomyelitis (chronic fatigue syndrome) commonly called “fibrofog.”
Specifically, smelling rosemary essential oil helps memory recall and performance on tests. Interestingly, this study also showed that groups that inhaled rosemary essential oil felt much more relaxed than those who inhaled no odor at all.
