You Will Not Believe What Is In This Vegetable

celerySome people believe that the celery is not particularly nutritious. It is true that it contain less vitamins and minerals compared to other vegetables, but the celery is rich in phytonutrients that have particularly beneficial effect on the body.

It is healthy from the root to the seeds and it is easily digestible, but that is only the approximate power of this great vegetable, the celery. Only 100 grams of root of this plant contains only 40 calories, which is twice less than the same quantity of potatoes. It is great for lowering the blood pressure and it is an excellent ally in the diets.

Mainly it consists of water and it is therefore the main ingredient of the good diets. But the secret that this vegetable is hiding is that you will not get the necessary minerals and nutrients from it! Therefore, it is not recommended to use it separately, but it is important to combine it with other ingredients which emphasize the effects of the celery.

It is known as the cleaner of the body; it acts as a diuretic and helps with expectoration and digestive difficulties. However, the celery is not “empty” when it comes to vitamins and beneficial ingredients. It contains vitamins K, C, B, potassium, folic acid and fibers.

In the past, it was considered as an aphrodisiac, but in combination with nuts.

Helps with the weight loss

The celery is a good food for those who want to lose weight. First of all, it contains extremely low calories – 16 kcal per cup. In fact, the digestion of the celery needs more calories than it contains in itself, so it is clear why it contributes to the weight loss.

Source of vitamin K

A cup of celery contains 37% of the recommended daily dose of vitamin K, which contributes to a normal blood clotting. Vitamin K deficiency does not only increase the risk of uncontrolled bleeding, but also weakens the bones – because the vitamin K contributes to building of the bones.

Contributions in the regulation of the sugar and cholesterol

The celery is rich in soluble fibers, which help to balance the blood sugar levels and to reduce the level of LDL, the so-called “bad cholesterol”.

Improves the cardiovascular health

It is proven that the celery ingredient that gives it its distinctive taste and flavor, 3-n-Butylphthalide (BuPh), helps to reduce the blood pressure. A study published in the journal “Phytotherapy Research” has shown that in rats with hypertension BuPh act as a vasorelaxant – it reduces the tension of the walls of blood vessels, thus lowering the blood pressure.

It has anti-cancer properties

The celery contains two compounds from the family of flavones, apigenin and luteolin, which have been proven to act against various types of cancer.

For example, one study from this year, published in the journal “Tumour Biology”, found that apigenin induces apoptosis (programmed cell death) of the cells of human gastric cancer, depending on the dosage. Another study, more recent, published in the journal “Experimental and Molecular Pathology” revealed that “even in small doses, the apigenin may slow or prevent the progression of breast cancer”. On the other hand, it seems that luteolin especially works against the colon cancer.

The overview of the various studies published in the “Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention”, concluded that luteolin may reduce the oxidative stress during the genesis of colon cancer, so “it may be considered as a potential cure for the treatment (of the colon cancer)”.

It is best to consume the celery raw – as a salad dressing or addition to cooked meals.  The celery juice is good, but since there are no plant fibers, it does not contribute to the regulation of the digestion and weight loss as the whole plant does.

And of course if it is possible, you should buy organically grown celery or at least celery that is not sprayed.

Additional advice

When you buy celery, keep in mind that the smaller root is better. In fact, the bigger celery often looks hollow and spongy so it is better to buy a smaller one with stocky head. And when you buy leafy celery, it is always better to buy the lighter one – its stems and tops are very aromatic.
